🅿️ Parallel Parking

The trick: Pull alongside the front car so your back bumpers line up. Turn wheel HARD right while backing. When your car is at 45°, straighten wheel. Once front of your car clears the front car, turn wheel HARD left and finish backing in.

  [FRONT CAR]

╱──────╲ ← step 1: align bumpers, hard right
       ╱ YOU ╲
      ╱──────────╲

  [FRONT CAR]
            ╲
             ╲─[YOU]─╲ ← step 2: 45°, straighten

  [FRONT CAR]
[─[YOU]──] ← step 3: hard left, settle in
  [BACK CAR]

✅ Within 18" of curb. Don't hit the curb. Don't crank wheel while stopped (dry-steering = points off).

↩️ Three-Point Turn

1. Signal RIGHT, pull to right edge, stop.
2. Signal LEFT, check mirrors AND blind spot, turn wheel hard left, pull forward until almost at opposite curb.
3. Stop. Reverse. Turn wheel hard right while backing. Stop before hitting curb.
4. Drive forward in the new direction.

✅ Use signals every direction change. Look over shoulder when reversing.

🔙 Backing Up Straight

Right hand on top of passenger seat. Look out the BACK window (not the mirrors). Go slow. Straight line for ~50 feet.

✅ Looking only at mirrors = automatic points off.

🛑 Stopping at Stop Signs

Two stops if the line is before the crosswalk:
1. Full stop AT the line (count "one Mississippi").
2. Creep forward to see, full stop again.
3. Then go.

✅ The wheels MUST stop completely. Examiner watches the wheels, not the speedometer.

🚦 Lane Changes

S-M-O-G: Signal → Mirror → Over shoulder → Go.
Signal for at least 3 blinks before moving over.

🛑 Instant fails. Don't do these.

  1. Hitting the curb hard during parallel parking or 3-point turn.
  2. Rolling stop at a stop sign or red light. Wheels must STOP.
  3. Speeding more than 5 mph over the limit at any time.
  4. Going through a red light or running a stop sign.
  5. Refusing to obey any examiner instruction.
  6. Causing the examiner to grab the wheel or hit an imaginary brake.
  7. Hitting anything — cone, curb hard, another car, a pedestrian (obviously).
  8. Driving on the wrong side of the road.
  9. Not yielding to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
  10. Phone use at any point during the test.
  11. Driving without seatbelt on (yours OR examiner's).
The #1 actual cause of failure in SC: Not coming to a complete stop at stop signs. Count out loud in your head: "one... two." Then go.

🧠 Quick quiz

SC-specific rules. Get 8/10 to pass.

📍 Route walk-through

Examiner will say things like this. Practice your responses out loud.

1
"Pull out of the parking lot and turn right."
→ Signal right. Stop at exit. Look both ways. Go when clear.
2
"Take the next left at the light."
→ Signal early. Get into left lane. Stop on red, go on green arrow only.
3
"Pull over here on the right."
→ Signal. Check mirrors. Pull within 12" of curb. Park. Signal off.
4
"Now do a three-point turn and head back."
→ See Maneuvers tab. Signals every move.
5
"Parallel park between those cones."
→ Pass the spot, line up bumpers, see Maneuvers tab.
6
"Back straight up about 50 feet."
→ Right hand on passenger seat. Look out the rear window. Go slow.
7
"Pull back into the DMV lot and park."
→ Don't celebrate yet. Signal. Park between lines. Hand brake. Signal off. Now breathe.
You got this, Charlie. Drive like the examiner is your strictest grandma. Slow, smooth, signal everything. 🏁
